About Us

The decision by Federal Environment minister, Peter Garrett, to block the unpopular Traveston Dam was widely acclaimed. But sadly, Queenslanders have been left with a rather unpleasant and salty aftertaste.

We, the residents in and around the Sunshine Coast community of Marcoola, firmly believe that desalination plants in Queensland are far from being a ‘done deal’ however. We have therefore decided to form a not for profit organisation called Communities Against Desalination Inc.

Our Objectives:

The objects for which the association is established are:

  1. To actively seek support through engaging with communities to stop desalination.
  2. To make representations at all levels of government to ensure desalination is not implemented.
  3. To demand governments provide genuine public consultation and complete disclosure.
  4. To demand governments explore all alternative water supply solutions to achieve more affordable and sustainable outcomes.

Through this organization we are now engaging with all other communities and actively seeking public opinion and support in our cause against desalination. The effectiveness of Communities Against Desalination is particularly relevant right now, as the Queensland water Commission are publicly displaying a draft of the South East Queensland Water Strategy and they are calling for public feedback on this document. Our communities have a window of opportunity to demonstrate by the sheer numbers of objections, that we do not wish to incorporate further desalination plants as part of our water supply strategy. Public submissions close 12th February 2010.

Quite simply, the Communities Against Desalination opposes desalination as a water supply solution. We believe that many more affordable and sustainable water supply options are available and that these need to be fully explored by the decision makers for our water supply strategy. We seek to rally support and make unified representations to government decision makers.
We urge you as part of your local community to join our stand against desalination by joining the association.

Where you fit in:

  • Share your thoughts with others in your community, we have supporters everywhere looking to help, they need to know we are here.
